GHMC Trade Licence in Hyderabad: Applying Online and Staying Current
A trade licence is the municipal permission to run a listed business at a specific premises in Hyderabad, and it is applied for online through GHMC's trade portal. GHMC's own renewal notice for 2026 ran the licence period from 1 January to 31 December, so plan for a calendar-year cycle rather than a financial-year one. Since February 2026 the old GHMC area has also been split across three municipal corporations, so the first thing to confirm is which corporation your premises now falls under.
What this obligation actually is
A GHMC trade licence is required to run listed businesses within the corporation's jurisdiction. GHMC's trade page describes it as a licence issued by the local authority to run the listed business within the jurisdiction of the local body. The licence is issued for a fixed period, and GHMC's 2026 renewal notice set that period as 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2026. Businesses sometimes treat the first successful application as a permanent status, which creates a compliance gap when the licence quietly lapses at the end of the period, so read the dates printed on your own certificate.
Which corporation issues your licence now
On 11 February 2026 the Telangana government reorganised the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation into three separate corporations under G.O.Ms.No.55. Cyberabad Municipal Corporation covers the Serilingampally, Kukatpally and Qutbullapur zones. Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation covers the Malkajgiri, Uppal and LB Nagar zones. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation continues for the remaining Shamshabad, Rajendranagar, Charminar, Golconda, Khairatabad and Secunderabad zones.
The Malkajgiri corporation's trade licence page carries the same procedure text as GHMC's page, and the Cyberabad and Malkajgiri websites both link their "apply for new trade licence" and trade-licence payment options to the shared trade portal and payment page that GHMC uses. Even so, do not assume the corporation named in an old certificate is the one that will act on your next renewal. Check the zone and circle map on the corporation websites, or the corporation named on your property tax assessment, before you apply, and confirm with the corporation if the answer is not clear.
How the online process runs
GHMC's trade page and its online-procedure note describe the following flow for a new licence:
- Choose the category that fits the business. The portal lists eating establishments, medical establishments, veterinary establishments, dangerous and offensive trades, and general establishments or offices.
- Register and log in with a one-time password, then fill the online application with the mandatory business and premises details.
- Pay the trade licence fee through the payment gateway inside the same application.
- Upload the two mandatory documents. A state order of 2017 under the ease-of-doing-business reforms limits what the applicant must submit to an identity proof (Aadhaar for an individual, PAN or the incorporation certificate for a business) and a lease deed or proof of legal occupancy. The same order says the corporation must take other details such as the building plan, occupancy certificate and land use from its own records.
- Track the application from your login. GHMC's procedure note describes a provisional certificate once the two documents are uploaded, then field verification and approval by the Zonal Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner or Chief Veterinary Officer, after which a digitally signed final certificate with the Trade Licence Identification Number (TIN) can be downloaded.
How the fee and renewal timing work
The fee is not a flat amount. GHMC's fee-rate sheet is expressed as a rate per square foot that depends on the type of road: single lane, double lane or multiple lane. A 2019 GHMC standing committee resolution, listed on GHMC's trade page, approved removing the earlier maximum ceiling on the fee. The rates themselves are not quoted here because they are revised, so take the current sheet from the GHMC website.
For renewal, GHMC's press note of 19 November 2025 explains the rules that apply. Under the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation bye-laws of 1973, an application for a new or renewed licence is to be made no later than 30 days before the previous licence expires. For the 2026 licence year the corporation deferred the last date from 1 December 2025 to 20 December 2025 because an election code of conduct was in force. After the due date the bye-laws add an additional fee that rises with the length of delay. A separate Telangana Green Fund amount is levied on every new or renewed licence in addition to the licence fee. A 2017 resolution imposes a heavier penalty, with a further monthly charge, on trades found operating without a licence. The GHMC press note sets out the current tiers. The note allowed renewal through the GHMC website, Mee-seva and the citizen service centres in each circle.
Each year's schedule is set by a fresh press note, so look for the one covering the next licence year rather than reusing the dates above.
A practical way to handle it
Apply through the GHMC online portal with the mandatory business and premises information, and once the licence is issued, log its expiry date in the same compliance calendar used for other statutory renewals rather than leaving it to institutional memory. Keep the Trade License Identification Number and certificate accessible for any subsequent inspection or renewal. Dues can be checked and paid on GHMC's payment page with the TIN or the registered mobile number.
- Apply through the GHMC online portal with complete business and premises information to avoid processing delays.
- Record the Trade License Identification Number and expiry date in the business's compliance calendar immediately after issuance.
- Confirm the current renewal process, fee and last date on the GHMC portal each year rather than repeating a prior year's process.
Mistakes that are easy to make
- Assuming a March year-end expiry because most other registrations follow the financial year. GHMC's 2026 notice ran to 31 December.
- Applying to the wrong corporation after the February 2026 reorganisation, or waiting for a renewal reminder from a corporation that no longer covers the premises.
- Leaving the renewal until the last week. The bye-law timing is 30 days before expiry, and delay attracts the additional fee described above.
- Uploading an ID or lease document in a name that does not match the applicant, which invites queries at field verification.
- Treating the certificate of another registration, such as Shops & Establishments, as covering the trade licence. They are issued by different authorities, as the first question below explains.
Where the risk sits
Fees, category classifications and the renewal process are set by GHMC and can change; a fee or requirement described in an older guide should be re-checked on the portal before relying on it. A business operating on an expired trade licence is exposed regardless of how compliant it was in the year the original licence was issued.
Questions We're Often Asked
Is a Trade Licence the same as a Shop and Establishments Act registration?
No. The Shops and Establishments Act registration (in Telangana, under the Telangana Shops and Establishments Act, 1988, handled by the Labour Department) is a labour-law registration that regulates working hours, leave, wages, holidays and conditions of employment at commercial premises. The Trade Licence is a municipal permission to carry on a specific trade or business at a specific address. Both may be required for the same premises, and they are issued by different authorities, the Labour Department for one and the municipal corporation for the other. Our guide to Shops & Establishments registration for Hyderabad businesses covers the labour-side process.
My previous Trade Licence lapsed because I missed the renewal. Can it be reinstated?
GHMC's bye-laws deal with late applications through the additional fee described above, and the corporation's 2017 resolution deals with trades found operating without a licence. What that means for a specific lapsed licence, including any compounding, depends on the facts and on the corporation's current practice, so confirm the position with the corporation before paying anything. Note that a lapsed licence means the period of operation without a valid licence is technically unlicensed, even if the licence is later regularised. A late renewal costs more than a timely one because of the additional fee, which is the practical reason to renew inside the window.
Do I need a Fire NOC for my office?
A Fire NOC is a separate clearance from the state fire services and is not one of the two documents the state order allows the corporation to insist on for the trade licence application. Whether it applies to your premises depends on the state's fire safety rules for the building's size and use, and on the kind of business. For a small office in a low-risk building it may not be needed. Confirm with the state fire services department, and ask the building's owner what fire clearance the building already holds, before you sign the lease. See the fire safety service page for how PNPC approaches it.
What is the Pollution NOC (CTE/CTO) and when does it matter?
Consent to Establish and Consent to Operate are issued by the Telangana State Pollution Control Board for units that generate pollution, and industries are categorised by their pollution potential. Most service offices and retail outlets fall outside the requirement, while manufacturing, chemical processing, larger-scale food processing and certain waste operations are the usual cases. It is a separate legal requirement from the municipal trade licence, so a licence for the premises does not answer it. Our Telangana pollution consent guide covers this in more detail.
What are the typical conditions endorsed on a Trade Licence, and are they legally binding?
Read the conditions printed on your own licence or accompanying letter; they are part of the permission and are enforceable. Conditions commonly relate to displaying the licence at the premises, operating hours for some categories, nuisance from noise, smoke or odours, keeping fire safety equipment and exits in working order, and not expanding the activity beyond the licensed area. Food, healthcare and chemical handling may carry their own conditions. Breaching a condition can be treated as a ground for action against the licence.
Does my e-commerce business need a Trade Licence if I ship from a warehouse?
A warehouse or fulfilment premises from which goods are stored and dispatched is a physical business premises, and PNPC's reviewed guidance is that it needs a trade licence from the local body just as any commercial premises does. Confirm on the portal which category applies and which corporation covers the area it sits in. The online storefront does not exempt the physical warehouse. If the goods include food products, food safety licensing applies separately; see our FSSAI guide for Hyderabad.
